![]() ![]() Even when the game is trying to be informative, most of what is told in the cutscenes is only understandable in hindsight. Retrieving these restores some of the armor of the ship (generally up to above 60% of its original amount), though the player should not expect any more aid beyond this. These can be shot down to release what appear to be ingots of metal. Interestingly, after the player’s ship has taken too much armor damage (a state that is conveniently indicated by alarm klaxons blaring away), there will be special triangular vessels which appear on-screen. However, there are no extra lives to draw from upon the destruction of the player’s ship, the player is booted back to the interlude screen (more on this later). These make the player’s ship relatively more durable than the ships of other shoot-‘em-ups. Armor is the ship’s actual hitpoints obviously, having this run down to zero causes the destruction of the ship. Shields act a meter of self-replenishing hitpoints. One of their arguments would be that the player’s ship has a system of shields and armor which prevents it from being destroyed from just a single hit. There are people who would not consider Tyrian 2000 to be a ‘true’ shoot-‘em-up. Of course, if the player intends to be a “purist” or just does not want a highly advantageous control scheme, he/she can make use of the keyboard or a joystick. This is an incredible advantage that can be useful when – or rather if – the screen is filled with projectiles. With this method of control, the player’s ship essentially becomes a mouse cursor with considerable lag, but it can move at any angle along the 2D plane that the action takes place in. Perhaps one of the reasons for the game being easy to play is that the player’s ship can be controlled with the mouse. This is because the game would be quite easy for seasoned shoot-‘em-up followers even new players would find the game to be easy after familiarizing themselves with its gameplay features. ![]() Yet, for the best gameplay experience, the game should be played at the highest difficulty setting. Obviously, the higher difficulty settings has this ratio to be more in the favour of the enemies. The difficulty settings which the player selects when starting a playthrough determines the ratio of the damage which the player’s ship takes when it is hit to the damage that enemies take when they are hit. The story is not to be taken seriously, but it does provide context for the levels which the player would play. Soon enough, he gets roped into missions and eventually a campaign against MicroSol, and also has to deal with some ancient terrible space thing that evil corporations tend to stir up. Unfortunately, a turn of events involving the death of his parents at the hands of the evil corporation MicroSol had him going on the run. The player character is Trent Hawkins, who wants to be just a simple pilot doing safe jobs. ![]() However, instead of presenting a grim and gritty dystopian future, Tyrian 2000 features a deliberately ham-fisted story about evil corporations which exploit outrageous technology for supremacy. Tyrian 2000 is also one of the earliest sci-fi computer games to make use of the premise of corporations being real powers in the future. The game takes place in a sci-fi future where humanity has expanded to the stars. The result is a game which rewards quick thinking and skill on the part of the player, like competent shoot-‘em-ups should, but is more forgiving of the occasional failure to dodge projectiles. Tyrian 2000 is the culmination of attempts by some game designers to develop a shoot-‘em-up that is more accessible and has actual story-telling. Furthermore, their stories tend to be throw-away plots. This is mainly because of limitations which have been imposed on the player character, such as being destroyed from a single hit and losing all power-ups which have been collected afterwards, to name a few. Yet, despite this statement, it is not an easy genre to get into. The shoot-‘em-up genre has the seemingly simple gameplay of a vessel shooting the hell out of other things on a top-down screen.
